The Times Square New Year’s Ball will be illuminate this year by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs (light emitting diodes). The Times Square Ball every year produces a spectacular kaleidoscope effect atop Times Square, the thousands of LEDs that light the ball are capable of creating a palette of more than 16 million vibrant colors and billions of patterns.
The first Times Square Ball was lowered from the tower flagpole in 1907 signaling the beginning of the year of 1908. The ball was made of iron and wood weighting around 700 pounds and was lit up with 100 light bulbs. Hope everyone has a save and happy time welcoming in the New Year of 2014!
