Lightovation- Dallas International Lighting Show
Kyndra gives us insightful feedback on her first trip to the lighting market as she reflects on some of her pre-market picks and how they shined.
First to see on her list of “importance” due to a personal affinity for the line, Kyndra was momentarily saddened when realizing that the Arteriors showroom was not displaying her fixture of choice – The Vickery Chandelier. This sadness did not last long, however. Kyndra explains, “My jaw was on the ground as I toured around and around the breathtaking showroom, and I was captivated by the richness of everything and beautiful details- I’m confident the chandelier would have been fabulous, and everything I imagined it to be in person, as was every other piece I viewed.”
Always a crowd favorite, a walk through the Hinkley Lighting showroom gave Kyndra more than she was hoping for. “The Larchmere Fixture was actually a lot more beautiful in person than I expected it to be,” Kyndra says about her Hinkley pick, “The center crystal shaft gifted this piece with huge visual impact, sparkle, and elegance.”
CURREY AND COMPANY
Another win in person! The Aviva Stanoff- Quartz Moon Starburst Pendant was everything Kyndra hoped it would be. “This fixture was a stunner. It was delicate, fresh, and truly alluring,” Kyndra stated, “The silver and pink beauty was ever-so captivating with it’s dramatic silhouette and soft finish combination of painted silver granella and accents of real rose quartz.”
HUDSON VALLEY LIGHTING
“Perforated metal at its finest! Simple but impactful,” was the reaction Kyndra had to Hudson Valley Lighting’s Gibbs Pendant. Available in three different finishes, the Gibbs series served up some serious modern styling with an industrial attitude- which is right on trend for 2017.
A missed sighting of Elk Lighting’s Rialto 5-Light Pendant led to an appreciation for a different product line expansion. Kyndra tells us, “I was thrilled beyond words to see that Elk had expanded their Armand Collection to include semi-flush mount fixtures, a two-lamp wall sconce, and a new finish application: goldleaf with clear crystal!” She continued by stating, “The new finish brought a freshness to the otherwise traditional collection, making it appropriate for more contemporary homes.”
The grand finale. Kyndra paints us the picture of her WOW moment inside the Varaluz showroom. “The Fascination in Zen Gold taunted me for a day and a half as we passed by the showroom countless times. Finally, on Thursday evening we ventured into the showroom, which felt like a hip New York City night club on a busy evening,” Kyndra continues on, ” The music was thumping as fashionable young lighting connoisseurs surrounded the bar and gazed delightedly at the lighting fixtures, furniture and other home accessories tastefully packed into the space. I excitedly headed straight for the front window to lay my eyes on the Fascination Series. It was true perfection: whimsical, striking, warm and an expert mix of hard and soft. No matter what piece you look at from Varaluz, you cannot deny that each fixture is designed and finished with attention to every detail – nothing is overlooked.”

Our January trip to Dallas was filled with new trends, fresh ideas and some exciting surprises from our vendors. It left us brimming with anticipation of what’s next to come in the lighting industry for 2017, and many new ideas to incorporate into the Creative Lighting showroom.
Here are our Market Moments from…
GOLD, GOLD…and more GOLD!
Simply put, GOLD is HOT. 35%-40% of all new introductions seen at market where either in antique brass, gold leaf or multi-finish designs with gold accents. Combination finishes were all the rage. Polished nickel with gold. Oil-rubbed bronze with gold. This metal finish has paved it’s way to the forefront and is forging ahead like a speeding freight train. Embrace it, or look out!
MODERN-INDUSTRIAL GOING STRONG
Modern-Industrial style has woven through nearly every lighting manufacturer’s product offering. Clean, minimalist designs using clear glass and vintage Edison lamps are everywhere, and being widely embraced by the consumer. This transitional look has a very “HGTV” aesthetic- need we say more?
MORE ON MID-CENTURY
For our lovers of all things MOD…you’re in luck. The iconic Mid-Century Modern style is still going strong. Product designs keep getting more refined and sophisticated, and the affection for wood materials has made a big comeback in the lighting industry. The combination of smooth metals with warm wood finishes is oh-so on-trend. And, most of the new product designs in this style category were in what finish? You guessed it… GOLD!
SPARKLE AND SHINE
We are all suckers for a little sparkle, aren’t we? There is a classic element to glass and crystal that, when done well, just seems to transcend time. This is proven to us year after year, during every market event, when we are repeatedly shown new product designs integrated with crystal. This year was no different. Manufacturers continued to WOW us with beautiful crystal fixtures, in fresh, new ways. Bath fixtures, pendant lighting, wall sconces…we just love a little glamour in our lives, and in our lights.
BEST IN SHOW
A lighting veteran made a big and bold market appearance this year. Dainolite was filled with delightfully fresh design releases- of great scale and beautiful finish quality. They were one of our most talked about lighting manufacturers throughout the entire trip! We were more than impressed and are eager to see how they continue to evolve their modern product line. This was their best release we have seen to date!
